Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, introduced SB 1452 as a first step towards a process that mirrors the successful pathway taken in establishing memorials for Vietnam veterans, firefighters and police.

This bill would create a memorial to forever recognize the troops and to display the gratitude residents have for their selfless sacrifice in the name of freedom, according to Wilk

“The Senate’s decision was an encouraging sign for California’s bravest men and women, their families and friends, that the sacrifices of those who paid the ultimate price may soon be eternally memorialized” said Wilk. “Nearly 800 Californians have given their lives on the battlefields of the Middle East since September 11.”

SB 1452 is expected to create a committee of experts to study the best practices for the development, funding and construction of a war on terror memorial in the State Capitol Park.

“Memorializing these brave California heroes is the least we can do and I am proud that the committee has recognized the importance of this step with their votes,” said Wilk. “There is no denying that these Californians paid the greatest price for us and that their actions are deserving of our highest appreciation, respect and, certainly, of a memorial in our State Capitol Park.”

The bill has many statewide supporters including veteran groups such as the American Legion, California Association of County Veterans Service Officers, California State Commanders Council and the Military Officers Association of America.
