Los Angeles Police Department officials are hosting the games; however, the event invites officials from agencies all over the globe.
The global law enforcement competition to promote physical fitness, stress reduction and camaraderie among first-responders is being held from Monday, August 7 to Wednesday, August 16, and at various locations throughout Santa Clarita, including Castaic Lake, Dr. Richard H. Rioux Memorial Park and the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Areas.
The Games have evolved throughout the years, starting as just a California statewide event in 1967, to a nationwide competition, and since 1985, a global event, according to the World Police and Fire Games website.
More than 8,000 athletes, all active or retired police officers or firefighters, from over 70 countries will compete in over 65 different sports and disciplines, according to Los Angeles Police Department officers. Officials said spectators are estimated to reach 50,000 for the games, which take place at several venues.
“The World Police and Fire Games not only help to promote physical fitness through intense competition, it also builds camaraderie and life-long friendships among first responders,” said Chief Charlie Beck, a veteran competitor and future athlete in the 2017 Games, in a statement. “The opportunity to showcase our great city is great, but the fortuity to bring athletes from around the world together with our diverse communities to share in the passion of sport, that’s something special.”

“Boxing has always been a premier and well attended event of the World Police & Fire Games,” said Beck, “but with Oscar and Golden Boy Promotions as a Presenting Sponsor, it’s sure to take the Games to an even higher level of competition.”
