Toyota Prius Vehicles Recalled Due To ‘Increased Risk’ Of Catching Fire

Toyota announced Wednesday that it will be conducting a voluntary safety recall involving certain 2016-2018 models of Prius vehicles due to an “increased risk” of a vehicle fire.

Although the recall didn’t indicate if any fires have been reported, the company is conducting the recall for approximately 192,000 vehicles in the United States, according to Toyota officials.

“All known owners will receive a notification by first-class mail starting in late September,” said Toyota officials in a statement.

The recall stems from an engine wire harness that connects to the hybrid vehicle power control unit, which could wear over time and cause an electrical short circuit, according to officials.

This can generate heat, and “if sufficient heat is generated, there is an increased risk of a vehicle fire,” the statement continued.

Toyota dealers will check the engine wire harness assembly on recalled vehicles, and if a wire core is exposed, the engine wire harness will be replaced with a new one that includes a protective sleeve at no cost, officials said.

If a wire core is not exposed, protective tape will be installed on the engine wire harness.
