While only 2.8 percent of the U.S. population has been diagnosed with hyperhidrosis, those suffering from the disorder can experience significant psychological consequences, according to the medical professionals at DermaCure in Valencia.
Studies show that 24 to 47 percent of patients felt that their sweating had a moderate to severe effect on limitations at work, meeting people and in romantic situations; 71 percent reported feeling less confident than they would like to be; 49 percent were unhappy or depressed; 25 percent stated they missed social gatherings; and 32 percent were limited in regard to sexual activities, according to DermaCure officials.
While there is no increase in the size or number of sweat glands in these patients, there is an over-activity of the sympathetic nervous system, which sends signals to sweat glands.

Botox has been shown to block the release of the neurotransmitter associated with these signals, inhibiting sweating in the same way it blocks the muscles that cause frown lines and crows feet.
Botox is FDA-approved to treat focal hyperhidrosis, with results usually appearing within one to two weeks of treatment and lasting up to one year, DermaCure officials said.
