Passive solar heating uses building components, such as windows, walls, and floors to collect, store and distribute solar heat to reduce the demand for space heating. This type of system does not require the use of any mechanical and electrical equipment because the heat flow is distributed by natural means, such as radiation, convection, and conductance. The thermal storage is in the structure itself.

In the Santa Clarita Valley passive solar design takes advantage of a buildings site, climate, and materials to minimize energy use. A well-designed passive solar home first reduces heating and cooling loads through energy efficient strategies, and then meets those reduced loads in whole or part with solar energy. Because of the small heating loads of modern homes, it is important to avoid over sizing south facing glass and ensure that south facing glass is properly shaded to prevent overheating and increased cooling loads in the spring and the fall.

Renewable energy is rapidly becoming a more popular way of reducing your energy bills, especially in California and here at home in Santa Clarita. This source of energy is much more efficient to the home owner and their community. This allows a user of renewable energy to not have to rely so heavily on their local utility company, and become more self-reliant on their own sources, such as solar energy. Everybody is looking to save money. Homeowners especially, considering that there are many other costs in owning a home, it is nice to see a reduction on some of their expenses.

Passive solar heating also offers significant benefits for the planet, too. Reducing your reliance on traditionally generated electricity will reduce your household’s carbon footprint and alleviate your effect on the environment. Solar electricity and heating systems produce no emissions once installed and have a smaller environmental impact than wind and hydroelectric power. Solar energy use in the Santa Clarita Valley is a great way to source your renewable energy due to the weather being very accommodating to solar solutions.
