On Aug. 25, the Valencia High School Marching Band and Color Guard held a fundraiser in the multi-purpose room of the high school, selling mattresses and mattress accessories, and were able to collect $4,750 in funds, according to officials.

“We want to give a heartfelt thank you to the Santa Clarita community for showing such great support of our music program,” said Band Director Mark Judd. “We were visited by over 100 customers who purchased a variety of mattresses and accessories.”

The money that was raised is set to be used for maintaining the band’s trailer, purchasing new uniforms for the band and color guard and purchasing and repairing musical instruments, according to officials.

“Each year we don’t know how many new musicians to expect,” said Terry Mitchell Collier, media representative for Valencia High School. “We don’t want to turn musicians away just because we don’t have enough instruments.”

School faculty noted that the hard work from the students paid off and made this event a success.

“All of the musician and color guard students worked very hard to get the word out, as well as help customers during the day of this fundraiser,” said Valencia High School Band and Booster Fundraising Chair Tanya Money. “We are so proud of how passionate the (students) are about what they do.”

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
