Vasquez Canyon Road Attracts Skateboarders After Landslide

A landslide that has lifted parts of Vasquez Canyon Road, some as high as 15 feet, has attracted several skateboarders to its undulating slopes in the days since the road was closed by the Los Angeles Department of Public Works.

Although signs are clearly posted and the road is fenced off, some skateboarders were spotted on the road as early as Thursday.

“It’s quite dangerous because the soil is still shifting under the pavement,” said Steve Frasher, a spokesman with the Los Angeles Department of Public Works.

“For a public agency that’s dedicated to safety, the last thing we want to see is someone get hurt out there,” Frasher said.

Anyone who ventures on to the road may also face legal consequences and could be cited for trespassing.

Crews have fenced of the area and asked travelers to stay away as the site was still unsafe, according to a tweet from the L.A. County Department of Public Works.

Commuters are also urged to find alternate routes as the road will be closed indefinitely, officials with the L.A. County Department of Public Works noted.

“Even as authorized employees with Los Angeles County, we’re not allowed to be there without authorization,” Frasher said.

Skaters though are drawn to the curves and contour of the road which allow for a type of skating that is not usually available, a local skateboarder said.

The road sits on private property and efforts to contact the owner are ongoing.

L.A. County officials are still looking for an official cause as to why the road has lifted so severely.

“Everything is being looked into because nothing is obvious,” Frasher said. “There’s no indication that seismic activity had anything to do with it.”

The closure will be in effect until further notice as the ground underneath the road is still moving.

“The pace doesn’t seem to be as great as it was on Friday, but movement continues,” Frasher said.
