Vista Canyon Developer Gives Project Update: ‘A City Unto Itself’ (VIDEO)

The Vista Canyon development has been in the works since the mid 2000s. And the people in charge of making the development a reality have ambitious goals for the project.

The development, located off of Sand Canyon Rd. and on the edge of the Santa Clara River, will have its own shopping centers, homes, houses and parks, while being self-sustaining in both energy and water use.

The undertaking, which is under construction at the eastern edge of Canyon Country, will feature single family units and luxury apartments, an 11-acre park and 10 miles of hiking trails, as well as a shopping center with the possibility of a rooftop bar, according to Jim Backer, who is heading the development.

“We’ve created a center here that will have commercial activity with restaurants, shops and office spaces (as well as) 1,100 homes, 800 of which are to be apartments,” said Backer, who is President of JSB Development.

Developers hope that the blend between commercial and residential spaces will mirror the likes of Town Center Drive in Valencia, while being more accessible to east side residents.

In addition to the residential lots and areas for retail businesses, Vista Canyon is slated to include one of the most modern hotels in the Canyon Country area, according to Backer.

“We’d either have a hotel or (multiple) hotels with up to 200 rooms that could meet all the modern expectations of a business traveler,” the developer said.

Vista Canyon is also being designed as the new home for a Santa Clarita Metrolink station for the Antelope Valley Line, which runs from the A.V. to Los Angeles.

“We’ll be relocating the temporary Metrolink station on Via Princessa over here,” Backer said. “We’ll be able provide double the parking, and an environment where people can walk to the station and get around without a car.”

The community will act as a “city unto itself,” according to developers, with recycled water and renewable energy sources powering much of the development.

“We’re building a water reclamation plant that will make us a net zero water user,” Backer said. “So, we’ll take the liquid portion of the sewer, treat it three times, and about a third of that will be used on-site while the other two-thirds will go off-site.”

Energy needs will be met through a combination of using wind power, solar panels and batteries in order to meet the energy demands of the residents and businesses, while also maintaining “self-sustaining” growth, according to Backer.

While one of the office buildings for Vista Canyon is scheduled for completion by the end of this year, the entire project is scheduled to be completed and moved in to by 2022.

  1. Toilet to tap water should be a huge selling point for prospective buyers.

  2. Their own EIR said they would add thousands of car trips on Soledad Canyon Road every day and that there was no possible mitigation. Local in Sand Canyon will be prisoners in their own homes during rush hour traffic.I guess I did not move far enough from “town” 25 years ago to live a quality life on the East side of town.

  3. I live in the eastern end of Canyon Country. They are building a new Facey and a strip mall here. Vista Canyon is about 3 miles west. Wait ’til the new intersection and bridge at Lost Canyon Road go in. A paved back road from Jake’s Way to Sand Canyon? That’ll be a big deal.

Where will the water come from? Why would a business traveler want to stay out here?

  4. Water, over crowding, gridlock on local roads and fwys. Bout right?

    • Its already horrible here. No matter what day or what time I drive there are lines of cars and numerous stop lights. It takes forever to get around and it gets worse every day.
