“Crime Prevention Unit deputies have noticed an increase in thefts of wallets from women’s purses while they are shopping in grocery stores,” said Shirley Miller, a spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The thefts have been occurring when purses are in the shopping carts and women have their back turned, according to officials.

“In a few of the cases, a ‘distraction technique’ was used where a second suspect approaches the victim, maybe asking questions about where a store’s product is at. While the victim is distracted, a suspect slips the wallet out of the purse,” said Miller.

Detectives investigating the thefts have noticed wallet thieves often go immediately to another retail store to purchase items before the card owner notices their wallet is missing.

“Obviously, always keep an eye on your purse and if possible keep it on your person,” said Deputy Chris Craft, one of the case investigators. “Keep your purse closed when possible.”

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials are also encouraging residents to spread the word of this crime.

“Spread the word about this crime trend, especially if you have any elderly relatives who may not be aware,” said Miller.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
