Water Rockets Combine Fun With Science At Santa Clarita Elementary School

The sixth grade students of Santa Clarita Elementary School combined science and fun by launching pressurized water rockets into the air Friday afternoon. The annual Water Rocket Launch teaches the kids a number of important skills as they build their rockets and ultimately launch them for all of the community to see.

“We try to tie in science, writing, speaking, listening and group skills,” said Mrs. Ver Steed, a teacher at the school. “It’s a nice community event.”

Some students found inspiration for their rockets basing their models on current science projects in the real world. “We based it off of the SpaceX rocket that takes normal everyday people into space,” said Jacob, a student at the school.

Others found inspiration in art and fashion. “We put duct tape, glitter, paint and some flower beads on it,” said Haley, a student.

“The kids have so many really awesome rocket designs,” said Kathy Lund, school librarian.

Santa Clarita Elementary School has been hosting the annual event since 1999. The children are already looking forward to next year’s event.
