While the day is controversial (some states such as Alaska and South Dakota do not celebrate the holiday), it is still considered a federal holiday, meaning some places will be closed.

Here’s what will likely be open, and what won’t be in Santa Clarita:

Banks and the stock market

Wall Street will remain open through the day, except for bond markets. But trying to do local banking could be difficult. Columbus Day is considered a bank holiday, so most banks are closed.

Schools and libraries

Santa Clarita Valley school districts don’t celebrate the holiday (instead of rolling it into fall break), so they will open to students on Monday. Santa Clarita public libraries will be closed, but not for the holiday. Instead, all branches of the library system will close for staff training throughout the day.

Government offices

The Santa Clarita post office will be closed, along with the Santa Clarita Courthouse. Looking to pay a parking ticket? Click here to find out how to pay online.

City Hall will remain open for any business with city officials, but county, federal and state offices will all be closed.

Businesses and shops

Columbus Day is not observed as a public holiday for every business, so most businesses will remain open. Some businesses give employees the day off, but that decision is up to the individual business owners.

With a three-day weekend of any kind, traffic through the Santa Clarita Valley can slow down with the influx of travellers. Commuters are encouraged to plan ahead and give themselves extra time to deal with the traffic. Law enforcement officials also encourage using a designated driver if going out.

  1. Columbus was a murderer, plunderer, slave trader and rapist and we gave him a holiday. Fortunately he cannot run for high office nor serve on a court. I’ll be celebrating Indigenous Peoples Day tomorrow. Please join me.

  2. I will be celebrating Columbus Day because I don’t try to judge people by today standards, which took over 500 years to develope, especially by left-winger’s pushing their agenda’s and degrading those that don’t agree with them. Columbus may have had flaws, but so does everyone, even those that won’t be remembered 500 years from now. I think Indigenous People’s Day is good, but create the holiday, don’t steal one.

    • You say, “Columbus MAY have had flaws…” Is there a question in your mind as to whether murder, theft, enslavement and rape are “flaws? This lefty KNOWS those are flaws.
