“The Sheriff’s Youth Foundation creates a second home for youth and families in disadvantaged communities to feel safe,” said the Sheriff’s Youth Foundation’s website.

Under the leadership of Sheriff’s deputies at 16 youth academies throughout the county, the program provides food and shelter; teaches and gives guidance in school studies, life skills, sports, computer skills and the arts; creates activities; and counsels and mentors, according to their website.

“YAL is an after-school program to help keep kids off the street and out of trouble before their parents get home, but it is not a day care,” said Deputy Brian Rooney with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, who also runs the Youth Activity League program for Santa Clarita.

During the school year, there are tutors from Boston Scientific that are there to help students with their homework, Rooney said.

The Youth Activity League doesn’t just focus on homework though. The after-school program also offers different field trips and activities, which is made possible through grants.

Some of the field trips include trips to Magic Mountain, Disneyland, The Museum of Tolerance, bowling and more.

“There are field trips that are awarded to students with good grades, and then there are field trips that all enrolled participate in,” Rooney said.

Throughout the year, the Youth Activity League program puts on different sporting events. For instance, the program just finished a baseball league, and is gearing up to start soccer.

The Youth Activity League program is for Santa Clarita students between the ages of 7 to 17, or 18 years old if they are still in high school, according to officials.

The program is for anyone interested in attending, according to officials.

During the school year, the Youth Activity League is open from when school lets out until 6:30-7 p.m., and during the summer from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Parents with kids enrolled in the Castaic Union School District are able to sign their students up to have the Castaic school buses drop their child off at Val Verde Park, where the Youth Activity League program takes place.

For Santa Clarita students interested in being part of this free program, enrollment packets are available at the Val Verde Park, located at 30300 Arlington Street in Castaic.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
