On Saturday morning, from 9-11 a.m., 110 volunteers from different Santa Clarita scout groups, schools and members of the community gathered at Castaic Lake Lagoon to pick up trash, said Bruce Tracy, a member of the Friends of Castaic Lake.

“The Castaic Lake cleanup event happens every second Saturday of the month,” he said.

The event is open to anyone who wants to come make a difference in the community, said Tracy.

“All volunteers need to bring, is themselves and gloves, and the trash bags are provided,” said Tracy.

Tracy and his wife run the monthly Castaic Lake cleanup event. The couple are also teachers and run the National Honor Society Program at Arroyo Seco Junior High School.

Twice a year, the Friends of Castaic Lake end the event with a hot dog barbecue to try to encourage the honor society students to come volunteer to earn their community service hours.

“On a typical Saturday, we will normally fill 10 to 20 trash bags,” Tracy said. “But on the big hot dog events we will fill 40 to 50 bags.”

Over the past weekend, volunteers focused on cleaning up anywhere on the east side of the lagoon and the campground.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
