“American Family Funding is very big on giving back to Santa Clarita and its local heroes,” explained Santa Clarita loan officer Jake Young. Young and the Santa Clarita branch have already funded many STAR Loans.  “We do everything we can to give back to the people who play a vital role in this community. One of the ways we do that is by offering reduced closing costs to teachers, firefighters, law enforcement and correctional officers.”

The home loan discount program started when Mortgage Advisor Fred Arnold and the loan officers at American Family Funding wanted to give this dedicated population a leg up on reaching their homeownership goals.

“We wanted to give them the dream of home ownership,” he said.

American Family Funding had already been active at local stations and schools, educating people about the first time homebuyer process.

“We try to be a resource and an advocate to explain the loan process,” he said. “But we wanted to do more than that.”

The American Family Funding team decided to put in a call to its corporate offices, to see how they could make this happen.

“Through collaboration between corporate and our local branch, we were able to make this happen,” he said. “We proposed a $500 home loan discount program, and they decided to match it, making it nationwide across all American Pacific Mortgage branches. Out of what Fred Arnold and our local branch started, now there are teachers, firefighters and police officers all over the country getting this home loan discount.”

The STAR Loan Program can be used in combination with any other loan, including a conventional, FHA or VA loan, as well as gift funds. To qualify, teachers must be credentialed and currently employed full-time at a public or private school. Qualifying law enforcement includes police officers, deputy sheriffs, highway patrol and correctional officers.

“The great part about it is, if you don’t need the money for closing costs, you can even put it toward furniture, a nest egg or other home-related costs,” Young said. “For our clients, the STAR Loan Program has been a huge resource, helping support our local heroes as they support us.”
