More cars than people have been found in tunnel
Now that the I-5 has been reopened after the horrific accident Friday night, some questions still remain as to the whereabouts of some unaccounted people.
Thirty one vehicles were involved in the crash; one passenger vehicle and thirty commercial vehicles. The Coroner’s office has confirmed that the remains of two male adults and one child have been found. Ten people were able to escape the wreckage, and ten more were treated for injuries.
Because the child could not have been a driver, that amounts to at least twenty two people accounted for and thirty one vehicles. Where did those nine people go?
Several theories abound. Some of the people involved could have fled the scene for one reason or another. An illegal driver or perhaps someone wanting to start a new life could conceivably use that opportunity to leave.
Or, the missing people could be victims of the fire. Because the tunnel burned so intensely for so long, it is possible that some human remains would undetectable.
Because the vehicles themselves were reduced to melted frames, tracing those will be difficult if not impossible as well.
As the days carry on, the investigative agencies will continue to try and put the pieces together. Until then, the identities at least nine people will remain a mystery.
