The Santa Clarita Skyhawks are looking for a few good men…or football players at least, as the team is set to hold their first official tryout of 2010 on Saturday, February 27th at Central Park.

The non-profit organization has already made an impact on the valley, partnering with the Michael Hoefflin Foundation to help bring awareness and support to children and families affected by cancer in the Santa Clarita area.

Led by Head Coach Jamil Antoine, a lifelong SCV resident and former Hart football player, the team has raced to a pair of victories since forming in late November.

In December, the Skyhawks hosted the Beach Cities All Americans at Canyon High School, and after jumping to a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, the team coasted to a 20-12 win.

Two weeks ago the team traveled to Las Vegas to take on the Henderson Wolverines, with the results no different.  The Skyhawks dominated from start to finish, winning 30-12.

While the team uses football to get their message across, the primary focus remains helping children with cancer.

“We are seeking local residents who have a positive attitude and strong desire to help serve their community,” said Antoine.  “We are building a fraternity of local citizens that will work together as a solid unit to help defeat children’s cancer through competitive sport.”

The team already has a solid core of players from in and around the valley, including former Canyon High School standout Sean MacNeil, and former Hart wide receivers Nate Almond and Ohre Kilpatrick.

However, the Skyhawks players don’t need prior football experience to play.  Several players on the roster have no prior organized football experience, but have made key contributions to the team in its short history.

Anyone interested in trying out for the Skyhawks needs to be at Central Park by 10am on the 27th, dressed in workout attire, with cleats.  There is a $5 tryout fee.
