A Fantastick Theatrical Experience Comes To Saugus

Musical production promises love, laughs.

The Saugus High School Theatre Department is in final preparations for its upcoming production of the well-loved musical “The Fantasticks.” The production tells the story of a young boy and girl who fall madly in love due to the meddling of their fathers, but leave each other to “see the world” after the manipulation is revealed.  Will their separation provide a deeper appreciation for the love they once shared or turn it to a bitter memory? A musical appropriate for all ages, “The Fantasticks” explores and celebrates the beautiful simplicity and heartbreaking complexities of romantic love.

The show will play for two weekends, January 21-23 and January 29-30, with performances starting at 8 p.m. Saturdays and 7:30 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays. Featured performers include Broadway veteran Sara Niemietz as Luisa.  A professional singer and actress, the 17 year-old Saugus senior starred in Carol Burnett’s play “Hollywood Arms” on Broadway and also in Jason Robert Brown’s recent musical “13” at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.

The show’s company includes many other accomplished Centurion performers, including Daniel Stewart as Matt, Jacob Thomson as El Gallo, Cameron Rose as Hucklebee, and Matt Thorpe as Bellomy. Lexi Laundy and Joe Veliz take a comic turn as Henrietta and Mortimer. The actors will be accompanied by a live band as they perform such classic songs as “Try to Remember,” “They Were You,” and “Much More.” In addition to the live accompaniment, the production benefits from the participation of three professional musical directors who have been rehearsing with students since early September.

The original production of “The Fantasticks” opened off-Broadway at New York’s Sullivan Street Playhouse in 1960 and ran for more than 40 years, making it the world’s longest-running musical.

Tickets cost $10 for adults and $8 for students. For more information or to obtain group rates for community organizations, contact
