The City of Santa Clarita will open a new nine-hole Disc Golf Course for play at Central Park on Friday, March 12.
The additional holes, located on the southern edge of the park, complement the original nine hole layout on the eastern edge of the park, and offer a more challenging alternative for advanced play.
“The new Disc Golf Course combines the challenges of greater distance, diverse terrain and enhanced obstacles,” said Rick Gould, Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Services for Santa Clarita. “Also, the signature hole on the course is an unheard of 668-foot Par 5 with a forced right-to-left tee shot down a long, narrow corridor of trees and slopes.”
Disc Golf is a game played much like regular golf except it is played with a throwing disc like a frisbee, and players aim for an above ground target or basket.
The new Disc Golf Course was created in part through the City’s 2009 Youth in Government program, which allowed a young intern the opportunity to research, design and develop the layout for the new disc golf course.
“The City of Santa Clarita opened its first Disc Golf Course at Central Park in August, 2007, which was met with rave reviews and requests for additional, advanced playing options,” said Councilmember Laurie Ender. “The new course offers more challenging play for those experienced in the sport, with the continued option to utilize the original course for beginner or leisurely games.”
