ADDY Awards Celebrate Creativity

Awards Honor Local Advertising’s Best Work.

ImageCreative excellence, outstanding communication and superior client service were celebrated Sunday night as members of the Advertising Professionals of North Los Angeles County (Ad Pros) gathered to celebrate their professional achievements and announce the winners of the 2007 ADDY® Awards.

Fifty-three winners took home awards in 28 categories during the group’s annual gala dinner held at the Odyssey Restaurant.

An independent panel of professional judges awarded Best of Show honors to a public service brochure designed by Christina Kieslich to showcase Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital’s maternity services.

The piece featured a compelling photo of a mother and her child, born just hours earlier.  “The picture speaks for itself,” said Kieslich, who works in the hospital’s marketing department.  “There’s not much design to it.”  She was surprised by the award, which she said really belongs to the doctors and nurses who do outstanding work in the maternity services department.

Jeff Freeman’s supplier diversity brochure for American Honda was recognized with the Best Art Direction Award.  The piece is used nationally by Honda to recruit minority-owned small businesses to compete for than a $1 billion in contracts awarded annually to outside suppliers by the manufacturing giant.

“I think the design layout, the photo and the printing techniques caught the eyes of the judges,” said Freeman, principal of JF Design in Canyon Country.  He used pictures of current successful contractors, as well as varnishes and spot color on the piece to make it unique.

Due to the high number of outstanding entries, the four-judge panel insisted on selecting four entries for Judges Choice Awards, rather than one.  Winners included The Sherwood Group for its design of a trade show invitation for American Pacific Industries, as well as its design for the ADDYs® call for entries; Doppelganger Advertising for its Loose Goose Wine Festival Campaign; and Factory Effex for its 2007 motocross accessories catalog.

The contest included student entries for the first time. CalArts graduate students Cameron Ewing and Florencio Zavala walked away with Best of Show in the student category for their work on “Re: Valencia,” in which they designed and displayed posters based on local residents’ responses to the questions “What’s one thing worth knowing about Valencia?”

Other winners included: Choppe Advertising Group, Ed Ouellette Studio, eSolutions, Huerta Quorum, Jacobs Creative Design, m/associates, Mellady Direct Marketing, Sandia's Web, Stacey Hauge Printing, Watermark Writing & Design and Watters Edge Design.

AdPros is an affiliate chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF), which administers the ADDY® Awards, considered the world’s largest and arguably toughest advertising competition.  Each AAF chapter administers a local awards program and the winners advance to one of 14 regional competitions.  Regional winners move on to the national/international finals.

AdPros serves the Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys, as well as the northern San Fernando Valley and Agoura, Thousand Oaks, and Westlake Village.  The group meets at noon on the third Friday of every month at Salt Creek Grille in Valencia, and visitors are always welcome.

As the “Unifying Voice for Advertising,” the American Advertising Federation (AAF), headquartered in Washington, D.C., is the trade association that represents 50,000 professionals in the advertising industry.
