Life in prison possible for New Year's Day rampage.
An Oregon man accused of murdering Canyon Country resident Christopher Ray Simons on New Year’s Day 2005 and shooting two other people plead guilty to murder and attempted murder charges Friday in court.
According to L.A. County District Attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons, Robert Wheeler, 28, will be sentenced Feb. 20 in San Fernando Superior Court.
Wheeler shot Simons with a .22 caliber rifle while the clerk was working at Santa Clarita Adult Gifts on San
Fernando Road in Newhall. After the pre-dawn shooting, he left premises with some merchandise, returning 15 minutes later and shooting him again.
He then traveled up Bouquet Canyon
Road, shooting and injuring both Randall Price, who was retrieving recyclables near Albertson’s Market and Alan Stearns, who caught Wheeler breaking into his Saugus home.
Wheeler called deputies from a pay phone behind Taco Bell in Stevenson Ranch to confess to the assaults; when they arrived, he shot himself in the head, but survived.
He now faces a sentence of life in prison.
