To provide the residents of Sunset Pointe, Southern Oaks, Stevenson Ranch, Westridge, Tesoro, Castaic, and Val Verde a voice in the future of their communities, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion by Supervisor Antonovich to place an advisory vote on the governance structure of the unincorporated areas of Santa Clarita Valley on the November 3 ballot.
“With the vital information necessary to make informed choices with regard to the future of their communities, this advisory vote will give our residents in unincorporated communities an opportunity to be heard,” said Antonovich.
The costs and benefits of the options will be evaluated in public forums and community meetings between August and November, 2009. A report analyzing the feasibility of residents in the area incorporating into a new city was released in June and discussed at two meetings held in Stevenson Ranch and Castaic. A new report exploring the feasibility of the area being annexed into the City of Santa Clarita will be released soon; it is currently being reviewed by city officials and will be available at meetings in August or September.
The three major alternatives for governance are:
1. Remain as official communities in unincorporated Los Angeles County
2. Incorporate into a new separate city
3. Negotiate an annexation into the City of Santa Clarita
