“A purpose-driven life for me is the only life to live,” Urbina said on the latest “My Conscious Dad” show on KHTS AM-1220. “At a certain point, people start to realize that they want something more meaningful than just chasing goals… They come to the conclusion that maybe there’s something bigger than me. Maybe there’s a bigger reason, a bigger purpose for me.”

The first step in discovering your purpose is deciding that what you’re doing now is not the road you should be on.

For Urbina, he had to try out dozens of different job paths– always chasing what he thought at the time symbolized success –before he realized what leading a purposeful life meant to him.

“Purpose for me is about feeling fulfilled at the end of the day,” he said, “and being paid or compensated fairly or abundantly for it. For me, that’s the dream.”

While you may not need to go through multiple jobs to have the same realization, Urbina suggests you take a deep, honest account of yourself and your life and ask yourself: Is this my purpose?

“If you don’t know, if you can’t undeniably answer ‘yes it is’ and know it with all your heart, then maybe there’s the possibility that it’s not,” he said. “That could be the first wakeup call for you.”

From there, create a vision for yourself and what you want your life to look like by examining the things you’re passionate about and what your soul truly yearns for.

“Write a list of all the the top 100 things you love doing,” Urbina said, noting this process could take a few hours, weeks, months or even years. “Start putting the ones that are really singing to you, that got your knee shaking, you want to put them at the top, and then you’ve narrowed it down to the top ten things.”

As you narrow down your list, you may start to feel some clarity about what your top few– and then your number one –passions are. If it’s possible, you can even try out a few things on your list and see what feels right for you.

Once you feel confident you’ve truly discovered your purpose, Urbina recommends you take a leap a faith and make a solid commitment to making it happen.

“Commitment is you taking a step forward, burning the bridge behind you so there’s no retreat,” he said. “It forces you to figure out how to reinvent yourself to make it happen.”

It’s common for people to waiver when it comes to actually committing to changing their life, whether it’s from fear of leaving their comfort zone or lacking the confidence that they can create an income out of it.

“That’s usually what it boils down to,” Urbina said. “The fears come in and really kind of sabotage you believing that it’s possible, because right now you currently don’t have a vision of seeing people having value in it and wanting to pay you for it. That’s part of the journey: deciding no– someday, somebody will.”

Most of the time, when people jump blindly into something truly believing it can happen, it does, but you have to see the value in it yourself first, according to Urbina.

“You’re making bold declarations, not knowing how you’re going to get there, and then you use your passion and your commitment and the creativeness that you are the powerful being that you are to create it,” he said, “every day, in little steps, until all of a sudden in a year or two years or five years or 10 years, you’ve manifested it.”
