Alex explains from past experiences that when the topic of vulnerability comes up, people get confused or afraid because they have created the distinction that vulnerability is a sign of weakness.

In the context of being powerful in relationships, vulnerability means to Alex bringing walls down, allowing someone to see what is going on and not trying to hide behind something.

“You have to be willing to be honest, sometimes that’s the hardest,” Alex said. “Ego is really big and arrogant and doesn’t want to look and see that maybe I am being stubborn. Maybe I am not as vulnerable as I could be and maybe that’s the reason my kids don’t open up to me.”

Alex and Jazmine both defined a conscious dad as a parent who is self aware, who is working on themselves to be a better father and who is present in the moment.

Alex explains that parents should not say to their children, “I didn’t raise you to be like this,” and instead saying, “my intention wasn’t to have you turn out like this… (This phrase) is different, it holds accountability… There must have been something that I was being or not being or doing or not doing that had you believe that this is OK for you to live your life like this.”

As a father of three, Alex explains, “it’s more about looking at myself and taking responsibility for the results as a father but also I think it’s important as a dad to choose to see that I can take responsibility for my kid’s results as well.”

“When you’re vulnerable as a parent, your child is now open and has the ability to be vulnerable because you’ve given them permission,” said Jazmine.

“Once you master being vulnerable or work on being vulnerable, all the other things in your tool belt just fall into place,” Jazmine said.
