Chocolates, roses, kisses and dinner reservations are fun, but how can those in relationships make everyday Valentine’s Day?
“Valentine’s Day is a once a year and people in relationships try their hardest to do something,” said Alex Urbina, Santa Clarita Valley Life Coach. “Instead people should be something.”
Most importantly, be present, Urbina said. Turn everything else off and fully listen and be there for your partner.
be gifts that all year long:
be committed
be giving
be understanding
be forgiving
be a contribution
be interested
Sometimes Valentine’s Day can be a day were those in relationships do a lot of special things to make up for the lack of being fully invested in the relationship during the rest of the year.
“I’m not saying don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day,” Urbina said, “but it should be a special day on par with many other special days throughout the year.”
Valentine’s Day, a day that we all set aside to spoil our loved ones, is a special idea, so here are some proactive, relationship enhancing ways to celebrate:
- While you’re at that dinner reservation, put your phone away, be present and forget about the to do list in your brain.
- On your special night out, be fun, be playful, and be affectionate.
- Everyone loves a good gift right? When thinking about that Valentine’s Day gift, buy something the other person has been talking about. Show your partner that you were present, and you were listening.
- Gifts don’t always have to be bought, maybe write your partner a letter expressing your love for them.
It is important to be the example in the relationship that you want to see reciprocated, Urbina said.
“I invite you to give yourself permission to be grateful for your partner everyday,” Urbina said.
