Alleged Drunk Driver Slams Into Fire Engine, Killing Passenger

Two people killed, CHP officer injured, in rain-related accidents Friday night.

A woman allegedly driving under the influence rear-ended a Los Angeles City Fire engine on the northbound Antelope Valley Freeway Friday night, sustaining minor injuries and killing her passenger, a 25-year old  woman from San Fernando.

According to Officer Michael Gubelli of the California Highway Patrol, at approximately 9:29 p.m., the 39-year-old Santa Clarita resident struck the back of the fire engine that was parked on the right shoulder of the road just south of San Fernando Road.  She was taken to Providence-Holy Cross Hospital, where she was arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter.

The fire engine had responded to an earlier crash, in which CHP Officer Jeremiah Harman, 34, was injured when his patrol car was rear-ended by a vehicle driven by Shashon McCalister, 45, of Los Angeles. Harman experienced chest pains and was treated and released from Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. McCalister was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

A 61-year old man from Long Beach was killed when the SUV in which he was riding spun out of control and rolled several times on the Golden State Freeway just south of Valencia Boulevard at approximately 8 p.m.

Huong Nguyen of Long Beach, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from a rear seat of the vehicle driven by D. Nguyen, who lost control and hit the dirt embankment, causing the vehicle to roll. Another passenger, Monica Do, 34, also of Long Beach, sustained minor injuries. All were taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where the elder Nguyen was declared dead.
