Angela’s Army Mobilizes Against Breast Cancer

Community garage sale to help pay for surgery.

Getting a great deal on vintage clothes is cause enough to celebrate, but this weekend it could help a neighbor in need as well. Friends and coworkers of Angela Roselund, a stylist at the J. Sisters Salon on Lyons Avenue who is struggling with breast cancer, are organizing a garage sale to help pay for her treatment and living expenses during her recuperation.

The sale will take place at the salon from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on October 18. The group, which calls itself ‘Angela’s Army,’ hopes to make the event more than just a bargain hunt and has arranged for donations of hot dogs, cotton candy, and a bounce house.

“We’re hoping to have more of a carnival atmosphere,” said Julie Allen, owner of the salon, “Everybody’s going to wear ‘Angela’s Army’ shirts.”

Those shirts are one of many items donated by local businesses and individuals. Starbucks, S&S Donuts, Cobblestone Cottage, Smart&Final, and others have provided materials or discounts toward the event. Storage Center of Valencia has donated space to house the collected items prior to sale, and a local girl scout troop has volunteered to help run a bake sale.

“All I had to do was open my mouth up and people have been unbelievably generous,” said Allen. “And in this economy you find that so surprising.”

Roselund, who is self-employed and uninsured, will undergo a double mastectomy on October 20. She faces a 10 week recovery period. Unsold items will go to support the American Cancer Society and the Assistance League.
