Caltrans has closed Angeles Crest Highway (State Route 2) to repair damage sustained in the Station Fire and the recent mudslides brought on by the rains.
The road will be closed from La Canada-Flintridge to Islip Saddle (junction with Highway 39) and will remain closed to the public until late March.
The heavy rains during mid-January caused several mudslides and road washouts along SR-2 in the Angeles National Forest. A Caltrans damage assessment team has determined that the most significant road washouts range between 50 and 110 feet along the highway and about 200 feet below it at some locations, making the highway unsafe and impassable.
“Caltrans contractors will work to return the highway to a safe condition,” said Dan Freeman, Caltrans Deputy Director of Maintenance. “Unfortunately, it is very likely that mudslide and debris flows could persist in the Station Fire burn area.”
Gary Boze of the Los Angeles Department of Public Works said that road crews have found several portions of the road impassable and will work with Caltrans to make them safe and passable as soon as reasonably possible.
