Cinema Veterinary Centre has acted as title sponsor of the “KHTS Adopt a Pet” video feature series since its inception in 2016, helping almost 100 homeless pets from the shelter and local rescues find their forever homes so far over the last few years.

“I knew it was very successful, but I didn’t have the actual number,” said Dr. Jaimie Ronchetto of Cinema Veterinary Centre. “So that’s pretty amazing.”
Ronchetto noted that pets in the shelter system are at risk of being euthanized due to overcrowding — with the vast majority of pets at no-kill rescues having been saved from a shelter — and so choosing adoption can save an animal’s life.

“Animals that are coming from the shelter system … only have a certain amount of time before their time is up and they’re unfortunately euthanized to make room for the influx of all these new pets that are always coming in,” Ronchetto explained. “If (the shelters) are overflowing with pets, they don’t have much time at all, which is really unfortunate, and I don’t think a lot of people understand that.”
For those who are looking for a specific breed of dog, Ronchetto continued that shelters and rescues often have a variety of pure and mixed breed pets in addition to “mutts.”
“Almost every single breed is going to be represented at the shelter at some point, so it’s just a matter of continuing to search if you’re really looking for a particular type of dog,” she said.
In addition, Ronchetto believes that rescued pets seem to know that their new family saved their life.
“I really think that they understand that they were rescued and given a second chance, absolutely,” she said.
After adopting a new pet from a rescue or shelter, Ronchetto recommends giving them some time to settle in, and then bringing them to a Santa Clarita veterinarian for a general exam.

“It is really important to come in for a full exam so that you’re aware of everything that’s going on, you can be there with your veterinarian, ask all the questions you may have,” Ronchetto said. “And if there is any little issue, then you can be aware of it and kind of nip it in the bud before it becomes a real problem.”

About the KHTS Adopt a Pet Series
Once a month, the KHTS Adopt a Pet series features an adoptable animal from the Santa Clarita Valley in need of a home. The KHTS Features team travels to different rescues and shelters in Santa Clarita to meet the pets and tell their stories in hopes of helping them get adopted. First launched in August 2016, the series has partnered with seven local rescues, as well as the Castaic Animal Shelter, to showcase more than 100 dogs, cats and bunnies, and has seen 88 — and counting — adoptions so far. The series was created by Melissa Lampert-Abramovitch, who has more than 10 years of experience in the animal rescue world and co-founded Madeline’s Angels Pet Sanctuary in Santa Clarita in 2016.
