Dogs, and puppies in particular, may see a variety of holiday decorations as toys to play with, so Ronchetto advises keeping this in mind when decorating the Christmas tree.

“Anything that looks like it could be chewed on, you might not want to keep low in the branches,” Ronchetto said. “Keep them higher up, away from curious faces.”

Cats tend to be more attracted to shiny decorations like tinsel, garlands and ribbons, so Ronchetto advises keeping these decorations or presents wrapped with these items out of their reach.

“They can ingest them,” said Ronchetto. “That can cause string foreign bodies, and that’s a bad thing.”

For both dogs and cats, Christmas tree water that has been treated can be dangerous if they decide to drink it, so Ronchetto recommends pet owners do not add anything to the water.

In addition, poinsettias are toxic to both dogs and cats, according to Ronchetto, who emphasized the importance of keeping them completely out of reach of pets, or skipping them altogether.

One way to safely include pets in the festivities is to give them presents, Ronchetto added.

“Then they have their own toys or their own treats or something on Christmas day, so that will keep them entertained and kind of keep them out of trouble too,” she said. “It’s a nice way for them to be included.”
