Annexation Talk Continues To Grow Stronger

Last night, for the second meeting in a row the City Council addressed Annexation of Westridge, Stevenson Ranch and Castaic in their opening comments. And in fact, out of those comments, some new proposals were mentioned. Is this destined to just fade away like before? Not Likely.

ImageAt last night’s City Council meeting, Frank Ferry and Bob Kellar both talked about the recent development regarding Los Angeles County. The County sent a check for $25,000 to the unincorporated area's town council, to pay for a feasibility study that would look into the possibility of them forming their own city.

Bob Kellar proposed that the City of Santa Clarita also send $25,000 to the town council, to make sure that they include the benefits of joining our city in the study.

The rest of the council echoed Kellar’s call, however something like that would have to be on the agenda at a meeting. It is very possible that it could be an official part of the next meeting.

Again Frank Ferry restated last week's comments, when he said that non residents are using city programs at the same cost and accessibility of residents and that is not fair.

The council also agreed that a new committee would be formed to specifically deal with annexation. Frank Ferry and Mayor Marsha McLean will sit on that committee, along with others.

City Manager Ken Pulskamp is still working with city staff to look into alternatives to the City’s requirement that areas interested in incorporation get 60% of their residents to sign in favor before they begin the process.

If a new alternative is found, it would certainly lift some road blocks that previous town councils have used to derail the process.

Roughly twenty years ago, when the city was forming, they applied for the City to span close to 90 square miles, an area that would have included Stevenson Ranch, Westridge and Castaic. The Local Agency Formation Commission however, cut the size down to about thirty.
