Antonovich Calls For High Security Housing and Staffing Level Changes to Stop Ja

To prevent further violence in our County jails, a motion
by Mayor Michael D. Antonovich calling on the Sheriff’s Department to
house high security inmates in appropriate facilities and improve
staffing levels was approved by the Board of Supervisors.

Antonovich’s motion directed the Chief Administrative Officer to work
with the Sheriff to:

1. Place high security inmates in the state-of-the-art Twin Towers
facility that currently houses women.

2. Implement a new recruiting bonus system to provide monetary
incentives for staff who refer qualified candidates to the Sheriff’s
Department and complete the Sheriff’s Academy.

3. Replace sworn staff with civilian staff in tasks that need not be
performed by law enforcement officers and make recommendations to
utilize sworn staff more effectively.

"To continue housing dangerous high security gang members with rival gangs and non-gang inmates is like giving matches to a child — it’s deadly," Antonovich said. "In addition to an aggressive recruitment effort, the Sheriff must free up deputies who are performing civilian or administrative functions — otherwise, it can take 20 to 50 years to fill 1,100 vacancies at the
current rate of hiring."
