Antonovich Says County Remains Well-Prepared for Potential Acts of Terror

Following reports of Osama Bin Laden’s recent threats on America, Los Angeles County Mayor Michael D. Antonovich reiterated the fact that Los Angeles County is one of the nation’s best-prepared counties to save lives and protect property in the event of terrorism. “While there have been no specific threats against Los Angeles County facilities, infrastructure or any of our cities or unincorporated communities, precautions are in place and our County personnel are trained, equipped and ready to act if needed,” said Mayor Antonovich.  “The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is the lead agency for terror preparation for Southern California and operates a highly effective terrorism early warning system.”  To prepare for biological or chemical attacks and other disasters, the County’s Office of Emergency Management works closely with our 88 cities and 134 unincorporated communities as well as the Sheriff’s Department and other County agencies, including the County Fire Department, Public Works, the Coroner and the Health Department. Los Angeles County is part of the state’s standardized emergency management system providing communications and coordination links between local and state government after a major disaster.

“We encourage the public to create their own disaster plans in their neighborhoods, at work or at home — to be prepared for all disasters — including terrorism,” said Mayor Antonovich.
