Antonovich Takes His Budget Case To Sacramento

mikeantonovichAt a hearing before the members of the California State Assembly Committee on Budget’s Subcommittee last week, Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich testified that the state’s fiscal crisis is the result of state mismanagement and that economic recovery requires cuts and reform – not shifting the burden to local governments.

“To address the state’s $28 billion dollar deficit and move California forward, Governor Brown needs to eliminate excessive spending, a bloated bureaucracy and adopt structural reform,” said Antonovich. “Shifting unfunded state mandates to local government is a Trojan horse that will bankrupt local governments and continue the exodus of jobs.”

Citing the need to attract and retain businesses, he added, “Californians want a competitive state – not a bankrupt state.”

He recommended adopting $32 billion in savings outlined in the California Performance Review, pension and liability reform and across-the-board regulatory relief to stimulate the economy, grow business and create jobs.

Antonovich said that the state’s plan to simply shift so-called “low level offenders” and parole violators to the sheriff’s jails is a fiscal shell game that will negatively impact every local law enforcement agency, increase the County’s liability and legal costs on top of the demands by a federal judge.
