Citizens invited to speak up, get involved in recycling facility location.
Three open seats on the proposed Recycling Facility Site
Selection Committee are open and will be filled by the City Council through an
At its meeting February 24, the City Council approved the
formation of a group to be comprised of a total of 16 representatives from
local organizations. Of the 16 member committee, there are currently three open
seats which the Council will select through an application process.
If you are interested in being part of this committee, you
will have the opportunity to apply for one of the open seats by completing an
application. The applications are available now and must be completed and
submitted no later than Monday, April 13.

have an application mailed to you.
The Waste Diversion Subcommittee will be evaluating the
applications and proposing who will be filling the three open seats. The
Council will consider the entire participant list at the Council meeting
scheduled for April 28.
The balance of the committee is comprised of representatives
from several community groups, including:
- Sierra Club
- Castaic Town Council
- West Ranch
- Canyon Country Advisory Committee
- Saugus Action
- Newhall Redevelopment Committee
- Valencia Area Representative
- Val Verde Civic Association
- Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce
- Two City of Santa Clarita
- Los Angeles County Fifth District
- Los Angeles County
The committee will be facilitated by Robert Newman, Director
of Public Works. Staff anticipates the committee will meet six times over a
period of six months, including two site visits. One site visit will include
visiting existing Materials Recycling Facilities in Southern
California. The second site visit will include visiting potential
sites identified by the committee.
Additional meeting topics will include an overview of the
City’s solid waste and recycling programs, history of the MRF site selection
thus far, a brainstorming session for potential sites, and selection of
potential sites based on site-selection criteria identified by the committee.
