To Halaby, a Certified Estate Planner, having a purpose comes from the opportunity to live a life where you’re constantly growing and learning new things, and you have people counting on you to be there.

“If your life in retirement is limited to waking up in the morning and see, ‘Do I have a hair appointment today or a doctor’s appointment? Do I (go) by the pharmacy to pick up my stuff or do I have to go shopping for the cat?’ — if that’s everything, if that’s your financial life folks, then I think you have a problem,” Halaby explained. “The problem is, you don’t have a purpose in your life — there’s nobody expecting you to show up.”

“(If) you live from holiday to holiday, doctor’s appointment to doctor’s appointment, filling in that gap means everything,” Halaby said. “If you don’t, then I don’t think you should retire, even if it may make financial sense.”

Halaby advised considering what portion of your social value and interaction is found within your family, what happens when you only see your kids on holidays because they have their own lives and reside in a different state or city.

When working, your social network likely consists of colleagues and co-workers whom you see every day and make small talk with, and who count on you to meet deadlines and get things accomplished.

However, Halaby cautioned those considering retirement to remember that this all goes away after your last day at the office.

“Those people aren’t going to be there when you retire by definition,” he said. “A gold watch and a party and that’s it,  you’re forgotten.”

By setting up your life in retirement in a positive way, not only financially but also in a way that gives you purpose, Halaby believes you can have what he calls a successful retirement.

“I see people that succeed in retirement,” he said. “People that succeed in retirement do so because they have fewer worries, more friends and a greater purpose.”
