Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Burglary team out of the Santa Clarita station got a longer day than they hoped for when they went to search for a person of interest in recent burglaries.
The team arrived at the 18000 block of Annes Circle in Canyon Country just after 9:00 Wednesday morning attempting to contact 24 year-old Rodrick Butler. Upon arriving, Butler reportedly spotted the investigators and ran away. One detective claimed to have seen a gun in his waistband as he ran.
A massive containment of the area near Jakes Way was ordered, and it included over 20 deputies, K-9 units and a helicopter. The containment lasted several hours, until Butler was found in a nearby garage around noon.
Deputies at the scene found a handgun in what they described as a hiding place inside the apartment that Butler was associated with. The gun reportedly came up stolen out of Glendale.
Butler was arrested on suspicion of burglary, possession of a concealed weapon and possession of stolen property. He was transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Station and is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
Investigators believe they have connected him to two burglaries committed in the area of unincorporated Canyon Country in the past month. The investigation into any additional burglaries in which he might have been involved is continuing.
