Arrest Made In Deputy Assault Case

TokuntsOne of two men being sought in an assault on a local deputy has been arrested and the search is on for his companion.

According to Sgt. Darren Harris, a resident’s tip and extensive investigation brought about the arrest, prompted by monetary rewards offered by the City of Santa Clarita and Los Angeles County.

The rewards were being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the persons(s) responsible for an assault on a Santa Clarita Deputy Sheriff following a “routine” traffic stop on Wednesday, November 11 near Walmart at 21048 Golden Triangle Road in Canyon Country.

Shortly after the reward was announced and released to the public, information began to come in resulting in new leads. One tipster provided detailed information as to a vehicle that was possibly the one used by the suspects during the commission of the crime.

Detectives from Santa Clarita Valley Station followed up on the information and located the vehicle in the Van Nuys area. Shortly after the discovery, detectives confirmed the vehicle was indeed the one used during the assault.

Surveillance operations were set up to identify persons associated with the vehicle and to identify the suspects involved in the assault. On December 16, a surveillance team from Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s Major Crimes Bureau stopped the vehicle with one occupant. The occupant was identified as Musheg Tokhunts, 31, of Van Nuys and he was arrested for a vehicle code violation.

Further investigation by Santa Clarita Valley detectives revealed that Musheg Tokhunts was one of the men suspected in the assault of the deputy. On December 17, Tokhunts was arrested and booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. Tokhunts was also on felony parole and is being held without bail at the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s Men’s Central Jail, Los Angeles, pending future court proceedings.

The second suspect in the attack has not yet been identified or located. The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station’s Robbery and Assault Team is asking for public assistance in identifying and locating him. They have released suspect Tokhunt’s picture in hopes that someone will recognize him and those associated with him.
