Considered by many to be an American masterpiece — as well as one of the most important plays of modern theatre — “Death of a Salesman” tells the story of Willy Loman, the quintessential everyman who spends his life chasing a dream driven by the belief that if you are well-liked you will never want.

Eventually, Loman is faced with the realization that, on his terms, his life has been a failure. As Loman becomes further and further estranged from his wife, Linda, and his sons Happy and Biff, audiences are taken on a 24-hour journey through the past and present of a man whose life is spiraling beyond his control.

“In ‘Death of a Salesman’ Arthur Miller has created a remarkably timeless and universal depiction of family relationships,” said John DeMita, director of the production. “The play tells one of the saddest stories in theatre. But it also brings us together to learn, in the many losses of Willy Loman, what we should appreciate and respect in our own families, and in ourselves.”

The cast is led by Norman Snow, a veteran of Broadway and feature films, and member of the first graduating class of the Juilliard School Drama Department, in the role of Willy Loman, and professional actress Peggy Flood, in the role of Linda Loman. In addition, the student actors who round out the cast have all appeared in professional and/or regional theatre productions.

“This production will be a powerful experience for our audiences,” said Paul Wickline, chair of the college’s theatre department. “With an unparalleled script, an experienced director, stellar cast of professional and student actors, and a talented design team creating the world needed to help tell the story, ‘Death of a Salesman’ is likely to be one of the strongest productions we have offered in recent years.”

“Death of a Salesman” will open Wednesday, March 30, and run through Sunday, April 3, in the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC) Black Box Theatre. Performances will be held at 8 p.m. March 30, through April 2, and 2 p.m., Sunday, April 3. General admission tickets are $10 for adults or $5 for COC students and senior citizens.
