Artists’ Association Hosting “Lilly Oncology On Canvas” Painting And Creativity Party

Santa Clarita organization joins with Lilly Oncology, Providence Holy Cross and WeSpark for event.

The Santa Clarita Artists’ Association featured Plein Air watercolorist Pong Apinyavat, a foremost painter of the California coastline, at the June 16 meeting

In partnership with Lilly Oncology, WeSpark and Providence Holy Cross, the Santa Clarita Artists’ Association will conduct a “Painting and Creativity Party”, as a way of celebrating the powerful role of art in helping cancer patients.  The event will be held on Saturday, June 21st from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at WeSpark, 26370 Diamond Place #507, Santa Clarita and is open to cancer survivors, friends, family and caregivers. 


Using collage, watercolor or acrylic and a narrative, participants will have an opportunity to express hope, zest for life, faith, uncertainties, issues of illness and life changes that coping with cancer brings.  This is an opportunity to share experiences as an inspiration to others on a similar journey.


Lilly Oncology on Canvas: Expressions of a Cancer Journey is an art competition and exhibition created in 2004 to honor the journeys people face when confronted with a cancer diagnosis. The biennial competition invites people diagnosed with any type of cancer, their families, friends, caregivers, and healthcare providers to express, through art and narrative, the life-affirming changes that give their cancer journey meaning. The result is a unique and touching art collection that affords people around the world the opportunity to view the universal range of emotions of a cancer journey, such as fear, hope, sorrow, relief, and courage.


Oncology on Canvas is now calling for entries for its 2008 competition. Art will be accepted from U.S. or Puerto RicoJune 30, 2008. residents affected by cancer in the following media: acrylic, oil, pastel, photography, watercolor and mixed media. Prizes consist of money donated directly to the cancer charity of the winners' choice. The deadline to submit entries is June 30, 2008.


Lilly Oncology on Canvas is presented by Eli Lilly and Company, a world leader in cancer research and treatment, in partnership with the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS).

Shirley Checkos, wildlife painter and teacher, won Apinyavat’s demonstration piece of Leo Cabrillo lifeguard station.

Shirley Checkos was the proud winner of Pong Apinyavat 's beautiful demonstration piece at the monthly meeting June 16, 2008. SCAA featured plein air watercolorist, Apinyavat, a highly-respected painter of the California coastline. His watercolors are found in many private collections and galleries in the United States, Asia and Europe.  (Photos included.)
