Artists Sought For Bridge Project

Golden Valley Bridge will feature city-themed artwork.

The City of Santa Clarita’s Arts Advisory Committee (SCAAC) is currently seeking an artist or artist team to commission artwork for “The Golden Valley Bridge Art Project,” an Art in Public Places program sponsored by the City. The art will be placed on the Golden Valley Bridge, which crosses over Soledad Canyon Road in the Canyon Country section of Santa Clarita. The purpose of the project is to create artwork for one or more (up to five) pre-existing cut out spaces on the underside of the Golden Valley Bridge.

The Golden Valley Bridge Art Project is open to all artists, age 18 and over. The deadline to submit materials to the Arts and Events Office is June 20. If mailing the submittal, please allow appropriate delivery time.

The artwork for the Golden Valley Bridge Art Project is intended to celebrate the City of Santa Clarita, so the proposed art should be reflective of Santa Clarita and could be based on iconic images such as the oak tree, or other elements represented on the City Seal. The artwork does not have to include images from the City Seal, but it must include elements identifiable to the City of Santa Clarita.

Artist teams are encouraged to apply, including teams of artists from multiple disciplines. The artist(s) will need to provide a proposal that includes an Artist Proposal form with a complete full color drawing of the proposed artwork, a Letter of Interest no longer than one page that explains the artist’s interest in the project, a current resume for each artist, five examples of the artist’s work in any visual medium and a self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of application materials. Also, if the artist(s) choose, they may include up to three selections of support materials such as reviews, news articles, awards, and other related information.

On the Artist Proposal Form a complete, full color drawing may be enlarged to a maximum size of 17"x11". Permission can be requested to work in a larger format.

The budget must identify all aspects of this project, including artist fees, creation of the artwork, and installation charges. The budget will be a factor in the selection of the artist for this project. The format of the budget is up to the submitting artist, but it must be clear as to the total cost of the project.

The artist(s) commissioned is required to prepare the outside wall surface and make it suitable prior to the artwork installation. The artist(s) must use high quality materials that will not easily be damaged by weather or sun, in whatever medium the artist chooses to be installed in the cut out spaces.

All artists’ submissions will be reviewed by the Santa Clarita Arts Advisory Committee, who will select the artist or artist team based on concept, adherence to theme, and budget of the project.

The required forms are available either online at santa-clarita.com/arts under the Public Art link or at the Arts and Events office located in City Hall, Suite 120.
