City Of Santa Clarita Holding ‘Meet And Greet’ With Professional Artists

Aspiring Santa Clarita artists are invited to attend a “Meet and Greet” and discussion with a panel of professional artists from Los Angeles on May 6, city of Santa Clarita officials announced Friday.

The free discussion will delve into the world of public art from a business perspective, providing information on how artist’s can turn their passion into a career, according to a city of Santa Clarita news release.

“The city of Santa Clarita is dedicated to increasing awareness of the value of the arts and what it adds to our flourishing community,” said Mayor Laurene Weste. “This panel discussion is not only a great opportunity for residents to engage with professional artists, but to learn more about the business of public art.”

The panel is comprised of “respected figures” from the Los Angeles art scene, according to the news release.

Artists scheduled to take part in the panel include Alan Nakagawa from Metro Arts’ Public Art program, Professor Renee Petropulous from the Otis College of Art and Design and Marc Pally, the director of the Santa Monica arts event, GLOW. The panel will be moderated by CalArts Director Tom Lesser.

“The three artists that are participating have a lot of experience in the public art world and they’ll be able to provide anyone that comes to the panel discussion a lot of information about how to break into the world,” said Jeff Barber, the city of Santa Clarita’s arts and events supervisor. “They can also provide people with some confidence about trying to apply for projects. One of the things with public art is a lot of people that paint, draw, or do photography don’t think they can break into the public art world, but they can in a variety of ways.”

Each panelist will give a short presentation followed by an open discussion with the audience that allows attendees to ask questions, he said.

The discussion is being presented in conjunction with the city’s “New Heights” artist development series, which is designed to assist artists, performers and arts organization representatives expand their knowledge and learn tools that will help them be successful.

The free panel discussion is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on May 6 at the Old Town Newhall Library on Main Street. No RSVP is required to attend.
