College of the Canyons students are set to display their artwork at an Old Town Newhall Library exhibit beginning in October, school officials announced Tuesday.
Called “California Dreaming,” the exhibit will feature digital and traditional methods of illustration created by students from the college’s graphic and multimedia design department.

“Commercial artists will always be faced with the challenges of interpreting concepts in order to create illustrations,” said Kevin Jenkins, the department’s chair. “The illustrations in this exhibit have a broad spectrum of interpretation and showcase a variety of illustration styles and creativity.”
Students were asked to imagine California as “emblematic of the American dream” and explore the state’s “natural beauty, innovation and enduring spirit of optimism” when creating their pieces, according to a COC news release.

School officials called the theme a “natural fit” for the exhibit because many COC students grew up in California.
“They were familiar with ideas of what California could represent,” Jenkins said.
Residents can visit the California Dreaming exhibit at the Old Town Newhall Library from October 1 through February 1, 2015. School officials are also inviting the public to attend a reception at the library on October 8 at 7 p.m.
