Six Flags Magic Mountain Unveils Twisted Colossus At Media Day

Six Flags Magic Mountain officials held their Twisted Colossus Media Day Wednesday and gave KHTS AM-1220 a sneak peek into the new Screampunk District and a chance to take the new rollercoaster for a spin.

The new Screampunk District area includes a new food area and the Gearworks Theatre.

Six Flags Magic Mountain officials held their Twisted Colossus Media Day Wednesday and gave KHTS AM-1220 a sneak peek into the new Screampunk District and a chance to take the new rollercoaster for a spin.

“I’m very exciting. It’s always nerve-wracking when you open (a new ride) but I’m very excited,” Fred Grubb, owner of Rocky Mountain Construction, which built Twisted Colossus. “It was already an iconic ride, it’s going to be that big again.”

Twisted Colossus is expected to be open to the public Saturday, May 23.

Twisted Colossus, the next generation of the beloved wooden roller coaster that thrilled millions of guests in its 36-year reign at the park, will be a unique technological marvel combining an iconic wooden structure with state-of-the-art iron horse track, according to the news release. The advanced technology, available exclusively at Six Flags, provides ride experiences Six Flags Magic Mountain Unveils Twisted Colossus At Media Day-1never before possible on wooden coaster, such as over-banked turns and inversions.Twisted Colossus will feature numerous exciting components including a “Top Gun Stall”, a “High-Five” element, and a zero G roll.

“It looks like a fantastic ride and we’re glad the see they kept the wooden structure and put a new component on it,” said Greg Bernards, vice president of Bernards Building and Management Services, who built the original Colossus. “It was 38 years ago that we built the first one. But we’re happy to see that Colossus is still here.”

A total of 24 people can ride in each trains and three trains can be running at once. One train will be set aside for rehabilitation,

said Construction Manager Bruce Thompson in a previous interview. Each train will be a different color — orange, purple, blue and green.

The original Colossus wooden coaster opened June 29, 1978 and was closed Aug. 17 of last year.

“It’s where wood meets steel,” said Debbie Erickson, director of marketing. “which has kind of been our theme.”
