“We are looking for Spanish or bilingual speakers”, said David Stears, who’s the Producing Artistic Director of the Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival. “We are trying to reach out to the Spanish community and create some positive experiences for the Spanish.”

Nearly 30 percent of the population in the Santa Clarita Valley is Hispanic or Latino, according to the United States Census Bureau taken in 2010.

The project, working in partnership with the Newhall Community Center, is based on the Cornerstone Theatre model: working with local residents in a community, devising a play, and they produce and present the play.

“This is a very exciting project,” said Carla Corona, whose CREZCA’s associate producer. “It’s a new opportunity for residents to participate in the arts.”

The program includes a playwright, two acting teachers and program producer, all of which have extensive backgrounds in community projects and have worked around the country.

The project is open to anyone 17 years and older. No experience is necessary.

“We want to focus on the adults and give them positive experiences and it will then translate to the children,” said Stears. “If you change the adults perspective or success with education, you affect the children’s success or participation.”

The first meeting for CREZCA will be March 7 at 11 am in the Newhall Community Center.

The project will culminate in performances throughout the Northern Los Angeles County Region.

The opening performance will be July 11 at the Latin Music and Cultural Festival, as part of the LA SummerFEST.

CREZCA is a community engagement project developed by the Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival, whose mission includes reaching the entire community with creative and theatre experiences.

  1. Did you mean to say the “Spanish-speaking community” or “the Spanish community?” Big difference.

“We are trying to reach out to the Spanish community and create some positive experiences for the Spanish.”
