“Zoology, works by LT Mustardseed,” a  display to be shown through May 8 at Westfield Valencia Town Center, was created by Lieutenant Mustardseed,  a Desert Storm veteran and a self-taught artist native to Los Angeles.

She has created numerous public and private art commissions, including the “Western Tiger Swallowtail” butterfly sculpture, which will be reinstalled at a new location in Central Park this spring, after it was damaged in a car crash early last year.

The butterfly sculpture is now headed to Central Park in Saugus, city officials said. The sculpture was in the final stages of repair and was to be completed by the end of September. The date of the actual installationExhibits_TCAS_Zoology has not yet been announced.

“(The site) has a high level of visibility in the park, so anyone entering the park would be able to see it,” said Phil Lantis, an administrator for the city’s art and event office. “It also is in an area that wouldn’t be impacted by normal programming that goes on at the park.”

The exhibit will feature a whimsical collection of sculptures created from recycled materials, according to a press release. Mustardseed uses machinery, welding and custom paint finishes to honor past traditions while creating unique works of art that represent the present.

Designing aesthetic, long-term durability and quality are paramount to the process, said Mustardseed.

One sculpture, “Pawsha” was created 90 percent from objects used from a pet retail outlet in Santa Clarita, said an official. Another, “Punk Elican” is a sculpture of a pelican made completely from recycled steel, wood and other found objects.
