Assembly Debates 2005 Budget

In a lengthy debate on the 2005 Budget yesterday, the Assembly voted down the Democrat’s attempt to pass an unbalanced budget and a tax increase in the same day.  Assemblywoman Sharon Runner (R – Lancaster) voted “No” on both of these proposals.

Families in California pay enough taxes,” Runner said.  “My votes today represented those families who have said enough is enough!  We pay taxes for everything we buy and are taxed for everything we earn. When will legislators get it?  It is better to live within our means than raise taxes.”

The Democrats in the Assembly put forth their version of the 2005 Budget this afternoon after limited negotiation with the Governor or the Republican Caucus.  Their budget would increase next year’s debt by $2 billion, shortchange local governments and ignore money-saving government reforms.

The Governor put forth a budget with real reform,” Runner continued. “How can liberals call themselves progressive when all they want is to keep the status quo? If we want real change we must have leaders who can stand up to special interests and move California forward.
