Assemblyman Knight Named To Assistant Republican Leader Group

steveknightAssemblyman Steve Knight, who represents Palmdale and other communities in the Antelope Valley, announced Monday that he will join fellow Assemblyman Cameron Smyth in service as one of the Assistant Republican Leaders for the 2010-12 legislative session.

“As a member of the Assembly Republican leadership team, I will continue to emphasize the importance of our caucus focus remaining on removing impediments to California’s employers so they can create jobs, and holding back the propensity of some legislators who resort to increasing taxes. The responsible thing is to reduce spending to match revenues,” said Knight. “California can thrive once again, and lead our country out of this recession if only government has the good sense to get out of the way.”

As Assistant Republican Leader, Knight will have many different functions in the Assembly Republican leadership team. He will work directly with the Republican Leader to focus and frame the legislative debate at the State Capitol. Assistant Leaders also assist with articulating the Republican Caucus message in Sacramento and across the state, and help promote the common-sense policy goals of Assembly Republicans.

Prior to his election to the State Assembly in 2008, Assemblyman Knight served on the Palmdale City Council. As a city councilman and vice mayor, Knight fought against tax increases and wasteful spending in local government. Upon assuming office in the State Assembly, Knight left his distinguished 18-year career as a sworn police officer in the Los Angeles Police Department.

“Steve Knight has fought tirelessly to get Californians working again and bring back private sector jobs to our state. As Assistant Republican Leader, Steve will play an important role for our caucus in advancing pro-jobs policies that encourage businesses to create and retain jobs here and fighting irresponsible tax increases that will only drive more jobs away,” said Assembly Republican Leader Connie Conway.
