Assemblyman Scott Wilk Talks About Patriots Luncheon In Weekly Update

Assemblyman Scott Wilk made his weekly report on Thursday, July 11 about updates from the legislature in Sacramento.

Assemblyman Wilk is currently in the Santa Clarita Valley for a July District work period. During this time, he will be on the road visiting the Simi Valley, the San Fernando Valley and the Santa Clarita Valley to see what is happening in his district.

“Obviously to represent people, I need to know what they are thinking,” Assemblyman Wilk said.

On July 11, Assemblyman Wilk attended the 3rd Annual Patriots Luncheon. The luncheon honored veterans from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Afghanistan War and the Iraq War.

“It’s just an opportunity to honor [the veterans],” Assemblyman Wilk said.

Profits from this event went to an ongoing scholarship program, known as the Ian Gelig Memorial Scholarship. This program was named after Sgt. Ian T.D. Gelig, a local veteran who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010. Its purpose is to give financial support to returning veterans and their immediate families who are pursuing higher education.

When Assemblyman Wilk goes back to Sacramento, he faces the final six weeks of a legislation period and then he will be debating on the floor for the rest of the time.

“I’ve been told that it’s like you sit on the floor and there’s no potty breaks and you just plow through it because we have a constitutional deadline,” Assemblyman Wilk said.

Also being debated is the Water Bond which will be on the November 2014 ballot. The bond has already been approved, but they want to reduce the price because it is pretty high dollar.

There will be a seminar on the Affordable Care Act on July 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the Santa Clarita Sports and Activities Center, Wilk said. The Affordable Care Act will go into effect on January 1, 2014 and is intended to lower the costs of healthcare by increasing affordability.

The seminar will be hosted by past president of the California Association of Health Underwriters, Chuck Rosen.

“He is an expert in the ACA and he is going to be there to teach people how to navigate the rules of ACA so they can use that a lot to benefit themselves and their families,” Assemblyman Wilk said.
