On the May 1 show, Wilk was going to try and make California residents appreciate their government more and not have a negative opinion of the California legislature, which is known for being slow and not getting much done.

Wilk was working on the bills AB-806 and AB-1221.

AB-806 was a community college access bill.

The problem is that there are not enough counselors to help students make and follow their academic plans. With roughly one counselor for every 1,500 students, it takes weeks or months to get an appointment with a counselor. When they have no academic plan to stick to or carry out it is harder for students to advance on to a four-year university or into the workforce with their two-year degree.

Wilk said, “ it is important to community college students…because each community college student needs to have an academic plan in order to move up in priority registration.”

Being a member of the Board at COC for six years Wilk said that the number one complaint by students was, “when can I get in to see a counselor?”

Originally community colleges were tied in with the kindergarten through 12th grade program. Colleges are underfunded today because funds only go to full-time faculty members not including librarians and counselors, who have a large part in aiding students in their success.

They are working towards getting more funding to community colleges for counselors, so that there are greater student success rates. The AB-806 bill has moved on to the Appropriations Committee with bipartisan support.

The bill AB-1221 is a student safety act.

With many recent scandals of students being harmed by their teachers, such as in the Mark Berndt situation in the Los Angeles Unified School District, they are working to make schools a positive, safe environment for students again. The current struggle is due to union controls and how teachers cannot be fired for the bad or harmful acts they take out on innocent students due to union laws.
