Avoiding A (Seriously) Scary Halloween

These safety tips can help keep you and your family safe during October’s festivities.

[view:node_ad=5]Friday, October 31st, tens of thousands of men, women and children will dress up in costumes and head to the streets to go door to door collecting candy. Thousands more, this weekend and next, will also be headed to parties, shows and theme parks like Six Flags Magic Mountain.

With all the fun though, there are some legitimate reasons for taking extra precautions to ensure your family’s safety this Halloween. Here are some things to look out for, and some advice on you can help keep others safe.

Safety tips provided by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s and Fire departments.

Trick or Treating

  • Trick-or-treat only in your own neighborhood, on well-lighted streets.
  • Have a parent or older brother or sister go with young children.
  • Throw away any candy or food that is not wrapped by the candy company.
  • If there are any suspicious treats, notify the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.
  • Sheriff’s officials recommend trick-or-treating at a local organized function, such as those provided by the Valencia Westfield Town Center Mall. The Sheriff’s will also host a Haunted Jailhouse event on Sunday October 26th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
  • Wear reflective clothing when possible, or attach reflective strips to costumes.
  • Make sure children inform parents or guardians where they will be trick-or-treating.
  • If wearing a mask, make sure it doesn’t restrict vision or breathing.
  • Carry a flashlight or glow stick. Do not carry a candle.

Motorists

  • Drive slowly in areas where children are trick-or-treating. Driving below the posted speed limit, even in residential areas is highly recommended.  Use extreme caution and keep a steady lookout for children darting into the roadway.
  • Turn headlights on, even before it gets dark.

Parties

  • Designate a driver, never drink alcohol or consume drugs and drive.
  • Sheriff’s and CHP patrols will be beefed up for the Halloween weekend.
  • Respect neighbors by turning down loud music after 10:30 p.m.
  • All teenager curfew laws are still in effect during holidays.
